Laura Duval is a New York-based artist whose drawings and paintings mine the relationship between surrealism, improvisation and the body. She is currently a senior at the School of Visual Arts majoring in design. Laura’s process focuses on freehanded, spontaneous invention. Works that begin with the tracing of a single line swiftly develop into a woven morphology of images, ranging from the somatic to the abstract. Her simultaneous celebration and corruption of organic shapes helps refocus our experience of the world, and our own place within it. Laura’s work aims to circumvent the desire we all have to label the people and things around us by framing a more direct encounter with beautiful but ambiguous forms, colors, textures and beings.
